EAGLES HOPE FOR FOURTH AFCON TITLE DASHED

By: Nice

On Sunday, 14th July, 2019, Algerian and Man City winger, Riyad Mahrez, scored a late winner from free-kick as Algeria reached her first AFCON final in 29 years with a 2-1 semifinal win against the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the Cairo International Stadium.

The Algerians were gifted a free-kick on the edge of the box when the game was expected to extend to extra time. The ball was skillfully taken by Mahrez which by-passed motionless Nigerian defenders to yank the white net behind the poor-rated Nigerian goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi. The goal came at the back of an own-goal by Troost Ekong and an Odion Ighal second half penalty.

The Super Eagles will face Mali, who lost to Senegal, for a bronze medal on 17th July, 2019. This will of course be another cracker for the Eagles as Tunis will come with full force to surmount them to book third position in the biannual tournament.
