THE OBC NWOLISE CUP: NAPSS WEEK THRILLER

By: Oladosu IBRAHIM

To honor the great spiritual intelligence himself, Prof. OBC Nwolise, as he retires from his 38 successful years of academic service in few weeks time, the NAPSS annual H.O.D Cup was christened Prof. OBC Nwolise football competition. This is one of the myriad of outstanding events slated to be held during the National Association of Political Science Students (NAPSS) week.

The competition started on a slow pace when the finalists of the department (400L) were being handed a “walk over” after failing to show up for their match against the 300L Giants, which implies 3 points loss and 3 goals conceded, while the eventual winner (the 200L Gladiators) and the eventual finalists (100L Starlets) played out a goalless draw on match day 1.

On match day 2, the 300L Giants were defeated by the 200L Gladiators, following a well-deserved penalty with a score line of 0-1, while the 100L starlets best their finalists counterpart with 1-0.

For match day 3, surprisingly, the 300L Gladiators were severely humiliated in their match against the 100L Starlets with a score line of 4-1, while the 400L were, for a second time, handed a walkover.

THE FINALS

On to the final which was held on the Thursday 16th of January, 2020, a fulminating, fabulous and fantastic match final was held between the 100L Starlets and the 200L Gladiators. During the course of the match, spectators could realized there was no place to focused on other than the SUB pitch, because in the afternoon there was no valid competition to this blockbuster.

This fantastic match which suffered a little bit of delay because of the lateness of the 100L Starlets because of the Central Test of GES 108. After their arrival, the match kicked off at 5:45 PM.

Shortly into the match, around the 8th minute, an handball occurred in the 18 yard box of the 100L Starlets, and a penalty was duly awarded to the 200L Gladiators, which Jerry converted, and its 1-0. Game on!

Although, the thrilling match was a bit one sided in the first half, because the 200L Gladiators dominated proceedings while their opponent played mostly as an underdog.

After the end of the less dramatic first half, the 100L starlets entered the field with a great hope of turning their destiny around, and shortly in the second half of the game, the 100L starlets level the score with a magic strike from Victor. It was this goal from Victor that brought some sorts of questions to the audience, whether the final will reinvigorate the title race or will it draw the vague direction of the title race to a conclusion.

After a lot of possession and counter football, the thrilling match came to an end with the score being leveled, and the match officials had no choice than to take the match straight into penalty. *And it was the 200L eeper’s expertise that came to the front burner, he saved two penalties, which sent his team to win the gold medals and one of Professor OBC Nwolise’s book titled. While the second placed team were compensated with books.
